MESHUGGAH - I (EP) [2004]

Review:

When you hear the name Meshuggah you will most likely think back to the episode of The Osbourne's where Jack blasted the neighbours with 'Future Breed Machine', the opener from their 1996 album 'Destroy Erase Improve'. Since then Meshuggah have been getting the recognition they rightly deserve, with a top class music video in 'Rational Gaze' from their 2002 masterpiece 'Nothing' getting massive air time on digital stations. They also did a successful stint on the Ozzfest tour in 2002 and have toured with bands such as Tool.

The single song EP 'I' is their first release since 'Nothing'. Clocking in at 20 minutes you know you’re either going to be bored for the next 20 minutes or be taken on a roller coaster ride of innovative metal. Thankfully Meshuggah have pulled out another classic, which seems to incorporate elements from all their releases over their 15-year career, but drawing mostly from their most recent two albums, 'Chaosphere' and 'Nothing'. The amazing thing about this song is that it never gets boring, not for a minute, it just keeps you hooked because there are so many different riffs, for example there is the near thrash beat of the first 3 minutes, which then turns into a break down with some frankly amazing drumming, it then speeds up again into the one of the greatest finger tapping guitar solo I have ever heard. For the next 2 to 3 minutes there is the some of the fastest metal around to keep any speed metal junky happy. Just as you think its going to get heavier it suddenly stops dead then what sounding somewhat like a music box, allowing you to recover from the attack which you just endured. Then, out off nowhere, the mauling begins again but with something a lot simpler than what had been heard, there is less of the crazy time signatures and shifts which we have come to expect from Meshuggah, none the less it’s probably one of the heaviest parts of the song, a real head banging moment. After that it goes into a slower subtler beat sounding like something right off ‘Nothing’ before another epic guitar solo kicks in followed by a dramatic build up, at times sounding like some of Korn’s Issues-era spookiness before the final part kicks in, another slow chug, inducing uncontrollable head banging.

Once finished, you will look at the clock and be amazed that over 20 minutes have passed, it’s like being in a time warp. This song is probably the best thing Meshuggah have ever written, they have managed to weave an entire album worth of music into one song and in doing so have produced one of the most interesting metal songs I, personally have ever heard. It seems that ‘Chaosphere’ and ‘Nothing’ were just precursors to this but the fact is that 'I' is a precursor to something even bigger, their new full length album 'Catch 33' (being recorded at the moment). There is a storm coming a Catch 33 is that storm, after knowing 'I' is just a warm up, I think Catch 33 could truly be an absolute revolution in metal music, but we shall see.

Proponuję wysyłkową sprzedaż płyt DVD - po kilka (5/6/7/więcej... ile wejdzie) koncertów na jednej płycie DVD, chętnie
dorzucę też teledyski i albumy MP3 tych wykonawców. Każda płyta 10zł, a koszty wysyłki pokrywam ja. Palę tylko na
markowych płytach DVD+R Platinum, nie na tanim badziewiu, jak niektórzy, więc płyty wytrzymają długo i bedą się czytać...
